Social Security "Very Important" to Voters; Bush, Gore Tied
April 6, 2000
A new Washington Post-ABC News poll of 1,083 adults found 74 percent
of voters saying that protecting Social Security will be "very important" in
determining their vote in the presidential election in November. The poll, conducted
March 30 to April 2 and with a sampling error of 3 percentage points, also asked
which candidate would do a better job on Social Security. Vice President Gore
and Governor George W. Bush were tied at 43 percent apiece.
A second new poll, conducted by Zogby International, asked 1,028 Americans
whether they would support Social Security privatization if it allowed them
to invest their payroll taxes in a retirement account of their choosing. By
a margin of 69 percent to 30 percent, respondents favored privatization.
