The President's Commission to Strengthen Social Security will hold its next public session on August 22, at 1 PM, in the Grand Ballroom of Loews L'Enfant Plaza Hotel. The topic of discussion will be a review of historical experience in administering portable personal accounts. Experts are expected to discuss examples such as the federal Thrift Savings Program (TSP) and private sector defined contribution programs.

The commission has also scheduled two public hearings: September 6, 2001, in San Diego, and September 21 in an East Coast city to be determined. These two hearings will allow members of the public to present their views on issues confronting the commission.

The Cato Institute will hold a Book forum for Scott Rasmussen, author of A Better Deal! Social Security Choice on Tuesday, August 28, at 4 PM. Rasmussen, co-founder of ESPN, and one of the country's leading pollsters, has always been tuned in to how Americans think. Now, in a new book, he explores the history of Social Security and changing attitudes toward the program, its many problems, and the need for reform. Rasmussen concludes that Americans are ready to support reforms of the system that give them more choice and control over their retirement incomes. To register, click here.
