DeMint Continues South Carolina Social Security Tour

September 5, 2003

An attendee of Social Security Choice.org's Greenville event kept his promise to spread the word on Social Security reform. The event, part of a statewide Town Hall Tour promoting Social Security reform, headlined personal account proponent U.S. Rep. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.). In a letter to the editor of the Greenville News, Dennis Jones from Simpsonville writes, "DeMint Offers A Solid Plan For Looming Crisis."

"I recently attended the town hall meeting on Social Security reform. As a person who is on the verge of collecting Social Security, I am most interested in what possible changes could be in store for Social Security.

"It is a well-known fact that Social Security will be in financial trouble within the next 15 years or so. Most of our federal legislators talk about the upcoming problem but are doing little to solve the problem. It was therefore a pleasant surprise to hear U.S. Rep. Jim DeMint make a solid, rational proposal that could save the Social Security system for our children, our grandchildren, and us.

"DeMint's proposal was based upon sound fundamental principles:

  1. No Social Security benefit cuts.
  2. No payroll tax increases.
  3. Social Security surpluses should not be spent on other government programs.
  4. Everyone could elect to stay in the current Social Security system with the existing benefits, if they choose to do so.
  5. If a person chooses, he/she should be given the opportunity to control his/her Social Security funds in a personal retirement savings account.

"DeMint is to be congratulated for tackling this controversial subject and offering a positive solution to confront the looming Social Security crisis. In order to save Social Security, our legislators must act now and not wait for the system to implode. Hats off to a politician who is willing to act and not just talk!"
