Poll Results Show Americans Say Social Security Must Be Fixed
September 30, 2002
A USA Today/CNN/Gallup poll released Wednesday shows that a majority of Americans continue to support personal accounts, despite downturns in the stock market and relentless attacks by political opponents. Fifty-two percent of registered voters would support a proposal that would allow people to put a portion of their Social Security taxes into personal retirement accounts that would be invested in private stocks and bonds. Forty-three percent would oppose such a plan.
The poll also shows the public's continued concern over the Social Security system's finances. Sixty-seven percent of polled adults agreed that the "Social Security system is in a state of crisis."
Many supporters of accounts have been feeble in their defense of the issue. Still, support for personal accounts remains high.
