Pro-Privatization Activists Vow Continued Push for Reform

October 24, 2001

At a press conference prior to the October 18th meeting of the President’s Commission to Strengthen Social Security, a group of organizations supporting Social Security privatization said that they planned to continue pushing for individual accounts despite the events of September 11th. Spokesmen for these organizations said that the need for Social Security reform was as great—if not greater—than before the terrorist attacks. Among the groups participating in the press conference were: the Alliance for Worker Retirement Security, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the National Association of Manufacturers, Americans for Tax Reform, Citizens for a Sound Economy, the Council for Government Reform, Women Impacting Public Policy, the 60 Plus Association, and the United Seniors Association.

Other groups, such as the Cato Institute and the Heritage Foundation did not participate in the press event, but said separately that they plan to continue their efforts to educate the public on the need to allow workers to save and invest a portion of their Social Security Taxes.
