The President’s Commission to Strengthen Social Security will hold its next public meeting on November 9, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with a break for lunch between 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. The Commission will be deliberating on Social Security reform options, including how to administer personal accounts. The Commission will also be holding public meetings on November 29 and December 11.

More information will be posted here as soon as it is available. The Urban Institute will host a forum on "A Framework for Analyzing and Managing Retirement Risks: Implications for Reforming Social Security?" at noon on November 9. The forum will feature Professor Zvi Bodie of Boston University, who has written widely on the subject.

The Cato Institute will host a book forum today for John Hood, author of Investor Politics: The New Force That Will Transform American Business, Government, and Politics in the Twenty-First Century. The book argues that the most explosive economic and political force of recent years has been the growth of personal investment, through IRAs, 401(k)s and other financial devices. Hood examines the political implications of the phenomena and how it will impact issues such as Social Security reform. Ramesh Ponnuru of National Review and former Gore speechwriter Daniel Pink will comment. Click here for more information.

The Cato Institute and the China Center for Economic Research will host a conference in Beijing, November 8, on "China's Pension System: Crisis and Challenge." Speakers include: Sun Jian Yong, Justin Yifu Lin, John Greenwood, Jose Pinera, William, Shipman, Michael Tanner, Mao Yushi, and Liu Ming Kang. To register, click here.

"And there are more ideas-driven initiatives to come, including the partial privatization of Social Security, an issue that would still be unthinkable were it not for the relentless agitation of places like the Heritage Foundation and the Cato Institute."
