Social Security to be Top Domestic Priority for Bush Over the weekend, George
W. Bush's top economic advisor stated that Bush would make Social Security reform
incorporating personal retirement accounts "his first major expenditure of political
capital." Former Federal Reserve Board Member Lawrence B. Lindsey told the Washington
Times that Bush's proposals "will certainly involve privatization or personal
accounts."
Michael Tanner, Director of Cato's Project on Social Security Privatization,
reacted enthusiastically to the news. "There is no policy better for the economic
security of the country and the retirement security of seniors than Social Security
privatization," Tanner said. "That Bush is willing to spend political capital
on social security reform is an encouraging sign."
