Will new GOP leadership have a new vision?

November 18, 1998

Congressional Republicans will choose new leaders today. But new leadership means nothing without new and vital ideas, especially when it comes to addressing urgent needs like Social Security reform. Here's the view of Michael Tanner, director of the Cato Project on Social Security Privatization:

"New visionaries will not be enough unless they develop a new vision. Social Security privatization should be at the heart of that new vision.

"Social Security reform provides an opportunity for Republicans to let the American people know that they are a party of bold ideas, not timid tinkering. The new leadership team should seize this chance to put forward a plan that empowers working Americans by giving them greater control over their retirement funds.

"Moreover, given the benefits of Social Security privatization for the poor, women and minorities, this issue provides an excellent chance for Republicans to broaden their appeal. Social Security privatization is both a winning political message and the right thing to do. Does the new Republican leadership have the courage and vision to do it? We'll soon see."

Social Security Privatization: A Winning Issue

As they sort through the ashes of the 1998 congressional elections, it should be clear to Republicans that they are going to have to move beyond scandal mongering and begin to articulate a clear vision for American voters. In today's commentary, Michael Tanner argues that results from around the country indicate that privatizing Social Security may be just the issue the GOP needs.
