Michael D. Tanner

Michael Tanner is director of health and welfare studies at the Cato Institute in Washington, D.C. Under Tanner's direction, Cato launched the Project on Social Security Choice—widely considered the leading impetus for transforming the soon-to-be-bankrupt system into a private savings program. He directs research on new, market-based approaches to government "entitlements." A prolific author and frequent guest lecturer, he has written numerous books and studies on health, welfare, and Social Security. Most recently Tanner co-authored two books with Peter Ferrara: A New Deal for Social Security and Common Cents, Common Dreams: A Layman's Guide to Social Security Reform. He has been published in the Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today. He has appeared on ABC, CBS, NBC, National Public Radio, PBS, Fox News Channel, MSNBC, CNBC and Voice of America. Before joining Cato in 1993, Tanner served as director of research of the Georgia Public Policy Foundation and as legislative director for the American Legislative Exchange Council.
