Robert Canales (R)I support allowing Americans to invest part of their Social Security in personal retirement accounts. But my view is that the best way to resolve the Social Security dilema is to hand it over to nonpartisan commission that cannot be pressured the President, Congress, states, nor either political party. Politics has made this problem worse than it should be. As you know, there was a bipartisan commission that made a recommendation on fixing Social Security but President Bill Clinton ignored the commissions report for political reasons. I would propose a nonpartisan commission composed of ordinary Americans who are not usually politically active. We should give this commission all the room it needs to conduct its study. Once the commission has made its report, we ought implement its findings regardless of the political repercussions. The well being of our Seniors is more important than winning elections or getting political against the other party. |
