Eleanor Jordan (D)Social Security As a state representative, I have worked hard to provide support to older persons in their effort to meet healthcare needs, and, as a Member of Congress, I will work hard to help older persons find retirement security as well. We must exercise fiscal discipline and use the budget surplus to strengthen Social Security and Medicare. Because it will put many people's retirement security in immediate jeopardy, I am opposed to setting up individual savings accounts as a replacement for the current program. The majority of all Social Security recipients are women. Twenty-five percent of older women live alone and depend entirely on Social Security for income. We must examine the system to further provide for women's retirement security. Because of the needs of older women, I support programs to provide additional retirement security for women. I oppose raising the age to receive full Social Security retirement beyond 67. |
