Scotty Baesler (D)Social Security Social Security represents a vital commitment to the American people and I am committed to make certain that the system remains solvent and able to meet its financial obligations. It's the most important source of income for middle-income seniors. The first step toward this goal is to reserve budget surpluses to strengthen Social Security - and my record reflects that strong support. We should lock away 100 percent of the Social Security surplus and work to extend its solvency for decades to come. I do not favor raising the retirement age beyond 67. I do not support privatizing the Social Security system, although people should have the option to direct a very small percentage of payroll taxes into stocks or bonds, as long as there are tight controls over how it can be invested. This would not affect people who already are retired or nearing retirement. |
