Social Security is a sacred promise to our seniors: it is nonnegotiable. Fortunately ensuring long term solvency for the program and conservative fiscal policy go hand in hand. That is why I support using the budget surplus to pay down the national debt and invest the interest saved back into the program.
I am opposed to privatizing Social Security. Although the federal government can and should play a role in encouraging private investment, Social Security should remain a guaranteed financial base for retirement planning. Conversely, other income should not be a consideration in determining benefits. As such, I oppose affluence testing.
